Lingering Dangers from Tire Blowout Accidents

A hazard on the road, even long after the moment of impact

Alabama auto accident attorneyWhen a tire blows out on your car, it can result in a devastating accident. Hit a pothole wrong or drive with a tire that has low tread or is misaligned and it could pop, leaving dangerous debris in the road and possibly leading to an accident.

Surprisingly, however, many of the accidents came not from the tire blowout itself, but the debris left in the road after the accident. Recent data from AAA Alabama found that from 2011-2014 there were 200,000 accidents in the US caused by debris on the road, like the rubber remains of a blown tire, and those accidents resulted in 500 fatalities.

When a driver comes upon debris in the road, such as the remnants of a tire, he or she is more likely to swerve out of the lane to avoid the debris instead of hitting it straight on. Swerving out of the lane, especially on an Alabama freeway at speeds of up to 70 mph, can lead to a devastating accident for the driver as well as other motorists on the road.

We handle cases with complicated circumstances

Car accidents caused by a tire blowout can be complex because there are so many factors that can lead to a tire blowout. If the tire's air pressure was too low or too high, if the tread of the tire was too worn down or if the tire itself was out of alignment, that greatly increases the chances of a tire blowing out. Once a vehicle loses a tire, it becomes extremely difficult for a driver to maintain control of the car, which can lead to an accident. If the accident was caused by the debris of a rubber tire left in the road, it is often difficult to figure out exactly who is responsible for that.

Liability for an accident involving a blowout can be a complex question. Vehicle owners have a responsibility to keep their cars in safe working order, which includes the tires. However, liability could also rest with a mechanic who replaced or rotated a tires, or with the manufacturer of a faulty tire. Or the municipal government responsible for maintaining the road could be held responsible if a pothole or other issue with the road surface caused the blowout.
